Not Sure if Dermal Fillers are Right for You? Find Out…
Thinking about booking an appointment for lip filler or other Dermal Filler treatments? Not sure if Dermal Fillers are right for you? Below we discuss 9 reasons to avoid or wait to receive Dermal Filler injections to help you plan for your appointment and optimize your Dermal Filler results.

1. Bee or Wasp Allergy
When receiving dermal fillers, it is crucial to be able to dissolve in the event of an emergency. Hyaluronidase is used to dissolve fillers, which is an enzyme also found in bee and wasp venom. Therefore if dissolving is needed, this could trigger an anaphylactic reaction. Individuals with a bee or wasp allergy are advised not to have Dermal Filler treatments.

2. Pregnant or Breastfeeding
For all pregnant and breastfeeding women, treatments with Dermal Fillers are not recommended. There is insufficient evidence to support the safety of Dermal Fillers in pregnant women and their effects on breastfed children. Therefore it is best to wait.

3. Allergies
If you have had a previous allergic reaction or hypersensitivity to Hyaluronic Acid or Lidocaine in the past, it is best to avoid Dermal Filler treatments. These reactions have been rarely reported.
At your appointment, you will be screened for any allergies or previous hypersensitivities. In the rare case, that a serious allergic reaction occurs, epinephrine is on-site and will be injected immediately.

4. Under 22 Years Old
Let’s face it, Dermal Filler injections have become increasingly more popular and there has been a shift to younger adults seeking treatments, and with that, more teens are likely to seek out treatments as well.
Dermal Fillers are approved by the FDA for individuals 22 years of age and older. It is recommended to wait until your face has completely matured before receiving Dermal Fillers.

5. Skin Concerns
If you have an active skin infection or inflammation such as acne, rash or cold sores near the site of injection, it is best to wait until these have resolved to prevent it from becoming worse or spreading to another area.
Individuals with a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring may not be suitable for treatment due to the increased risk.
Other Treatments: facial peels, micro-needling, micro-blading, lasers, ultrasound-based treatments or dental procedures. It is best to wait 2 weeks before and after these treatments to receive Dermal Fillers.

6. Body Dysmorphia Disorder (BDD)
Since appearance concerns are the focus of BDD, individuals with BDD commonly seek out and receive Dermal Filler treatments in hopes that changing their appearance will resolve their appearance concerns. Cosmetic treatments for BDD rarely resolve symptoms of BDD, and in some cases, make symptoms worse, and are not recommended.

7. Bleeding Disorders & Blood Thinners
Because Dermal Fillers are injected by needle, there is a risk of bleeding. Individuals with bleeding disorders or taking blood thinners should avoid Dermal Fillers due to the increased risk.
Don't drink alcohol at least 24 hours before and after your Dermal Filler treatment. Alcohol thins the blood and increases the risk of bleeding and bruising.
Don't take any blood thinners for 7-10 days before your Dermal Filler treatment, unless medically necessary. Check with your physician first before stopping any medications.

8. Medications - Beta Blockers & Cimetidine
Individuals taking medications that reduce or inhibit metabolism (Beta blockers, Cimetidine, etc), are advised not to have Dermal Filler treatments. At your appointment, you will be screened for any medication contraindications.

9. Uncertainty
Before your treatment, you will be screened for any medical contraindications. We will assess, educate and encourage you to ask any questions during the consultation. If you remain uncertain, then we do not recommend proceeding with treatment and will recommend you wait until you are.
